The English language is a bit of an enigma; it’s possible that it might even rival God in its mystery. It’s full of words that uplift and encourage. It’s full of words that frustrate and offend. It’s scientific. It’s mathematical. It’s logical. It’s spiritual. It’s abstract. It’s colloquial. It’s slang. It’s me. It’s you.
It’s confusing…yet comforting.
One word that really stood out to me today is the word: SURRENDER. What an awesome word. To yield. To give up. To abandon. To relinquish. To consciously choose to set myself aside. Not really a word that parallels cultural norms.
We’re raised to fight, to strive for the best, to be number one. How can you possibly be number one AND surrender? A winner doesn’t give up. First place isn’t awarded to the last one to cross the finish line. Yet, Jesus said the last will be first and the first last (Matthew 20:16).
Nothing makes sense.
That’s right, NOTHING makes sense and without Jesus nothing is ALL YOU’LL EVER HAVE. The first step in knowing Jesus, the first step in starting a relationship with him, involves SURRENDER.
I YIELD to his authority.
I GIVE UP my selfish desires.
I ABANDON my pride.
I RELINQUISH control.
I CONSCIOUSLY CHOOSE TO SET MYSELF ASIDE and allow Jesus to live through me.
I SURRENDER my life to the one who gave his life for me.
Nothing makes sense.
Does it have to?
No.
That’s faith.
That’s hope.
That’s Jesus.
What are you still holding on to? What are you waiting for? What’s holding you back?
