As I sat idling at the red light this morning, thinking about my day, thinking about how I somehow missed the fact that my youngest had no school (yes, while he’s buckled into his booster seat, on the way to my workplace), thinking about Celebrate Recovery, just thinking…I noticed that each vehicle making a left turn cut the turn short, it might have been ever so slightly, but nevertheless they cut the turn.
Why?
Why are we always looking for shortcuts? We look for shortcuts in our marriages, our important relationships, our jobs, our finances, our driving, our EVERYTHING. Shorter. Faster. What’s the rush? What’s the hurry?
It’s something as simple as a left turn. It saves such a miniscule amount of time that I don’t even think we can consciously measure it. What’s the point?
What if Noah took a shortcut and made a slightly smaller ark? What if Abraham took a shortcut and traveled only so far? What if Moses took a shortcut and missed the Red Sea? What if Joshua took a shortcut and circled Jericho 6 days? What if John the Baptist took a shortcut and napped THAT day? What if Jesus took a shortcut and imparted a bit of grace, took a little of our guilt?
Shortcuts suck.
Slow down.
Take your time.
Enjoy the moment.
Take it all in.
Do it right.
Do it well.
What areas of your life are you cutting short? What shortcuts are you taking?
