Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, Or as a fool to the correction of the stocks, Till an arrow struck his liver. As a bird hastens to the snare, He did not know it would cost his life.
Proverbs 7:22-23 NKJV
He did not know it would cost his life.
He did not know.
It was a surprise. It was unsuspected. An anomaly. A freak incident. What were the chances?
I can’t help but feel as if this verse describes most of us, if not all of us and our narrow view of life. I say narrow view because that’s what we have. Our perspective is shaped by our experiences. If you’re hurt, you see the world through that hurt. If you’re sad, you see the world through that sadness. If you’re filled with joy, you see the world through that joy. It’s a NARROW view. Limited at best.
Each of us is struggling with some hurt, habit, or hang-up. Each of us is struggling with something. Some know it. Most don’t. Most don’t want to. A narrow view.
He did not know.
Denial can give us some of the GREATEST excuses in the world, or so we think. There’s nothing great about an excuse. Excuses are lame. Excuses keep your hands tied, your feet shackled, your heart hard, your eyes closed, your perspective distorted…narrow. Denial blinds your eyes, narrows your vision so that you CAN’T see the arrow coming. Denial throws logic out the door, destroys your ability to think clearly.
He didn’t know it would cost his life…because he didn’t want to.
He didn’t know it would cost his life…because he closed his eyes.
He didn’t know it would cost his life…because he was trapped in denial.
He didn’t know it would cost his life…because he gave up, gave in, threw in the towel.
Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; For she has cast down many wounded, And all who were slain by her were strong men.
Proverbs 7:25-26 NKJV
Continue reading and we discover what NOT to do. Do NOT turn your heart aside. Do NOT stray. Remember, you are POWERLESS to control your tendency to do the wrong thing and that your life is unmanageable (words I live by).
All who were slain by her were strong men.
It’s in your weakness He makes you strong.
You can’t do it alone.
It’s not too late. You can turn to Him right now. You can ask for help. You can ask to be rescued. He’ll answer. He’ll pick you up. He’ll lift you up. He’ll give you new life. He’ll give you hope.
Open your eyes.
