This past weekend at church the band took us through the song Great Are You Lord (from the album Live by All Sons & Daughters). It’s one of those overly simple yet profoundly insightful songs.
Simple because it’s a few lines repeated over and over again.
Insightful because the lyrics teach and because it’s so repetitious it causes you to think, to contemplate, to meditate on the very nature of God.
With all that said…
“It’s Your breath in our lungs, so we pour out our praise, we pour out our praise.”
As these words escaped from my mouth, probably as they were barely forming on my lips, my heart was filled with gladness and gratitude. I wanted to shout, “I’M ALIVE!” We, as a community, have turned the word ‘blessed’ into something related to material possession. I’m blessed because I have a nice house. I’m blessed because I have a nice car. I’m blessed because I have nice clothes. I’m blessed because I make a lot of money. I’m blessed because God has given me lots of STUFF… this song was a great reminder that I’m blessed because God has given me LIFE!
If you woke up today, you’re BLESSED!
And so I praise God. I give Him thanks. I celebrate who He is and what He’s doing and what He’s done. I GET TO enjoy another day, another moment. I LOVE how the songwriter uses the word ‘pour’ to describe the act of displaying gratitude/ praise/ worship.
I think of how as a child I was so excited to finally be able to pour my own milk that I made a mess every time. Then, as an adult, the excitement is gone and I simply focus on not making a mess.
How’d I lose focus?
I want that same childlike excitement when it comes to my relationship with God. Let it get messy. Let there be tears and laughter and dancing and shouting and clapping! I don’t want neat. I don’t want tidy.
I want to POUR OUT His praise.
I will POUR OUT His praise.
What does ‘pouring out’ praise look like for you? Do you consider yourself blessed? When was the last time you said ‘thank you’?
