It's The Little Things That Mean The Most

There’s something to be said about the “little things.” I always wondered what the “little things” were. I remember hearing, “It’s the little things that mean the most,” and thinking, “What the heck is a little thing?” Is it referring to something small… as in size? Is it speaking metaphorically? It almost sounds like an excuse to not do much. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

I’ve come to realize the “little things” are those things that just don’t mean that much to YOU. You don’t care if you see them or have them or do them or experience them. They don’t grab your attention. They don’t keep you up at night. In your mind they are insignificant. BUT…

The “little things” mean a LOT to the people you LOVE.

My wife loves it when I make her coffee.
My kids love it when I walk them to the bus stop (and wave as the bus passes by).
My dog loves it when I brush him (at least I think he does).

And these “little things” add up to BIG things. It shows you care, that you’re interested, that you pay attention.

The opposite happens when DON’T do the “little things.” In fact, LITTLE problems stack up and pile up and grow into BIG problems. All of the sudden you’re uncaring, disinterested, selfish, a jerk, unloving, and lots of other not-so nice words.

You’ve probably already made a list of the “little things” you DO and DON’T do. You’ve probably even made a list of the “little things” you appreciate that someone else does for you (and the things they don’t do). It’s crazy how something so little can mean so much.

Don’t neglect the “little things.”

Reflect:

  • What are some of the “little things” you do for others?
  • What are some of the “little things” you neglect to do?
  • How do you feel when OTHERS do the “little things” for you?
  • What would happen if we ALL spent a little more time focusing on OTHERS (and serving their needs)?
