Here are a few things about following Jesus from Luke 9:61-62…
#1 It Takes
Commitment—not just a prayer. Many of us pray a prayer and think that’s the
sum total of Christianity. Jesus calls us to FOLLOW him and he’s not talking
about Twitter’s version of following when you get to read what he says (maybe)
from your phone, he’s talking about dropping everything and reprioritizing your
life around HIM.
#2 He Wants To Be
First—not just in the top 10. When Jesus is anything BUT first it’s easy to
set him aside, set your calling aside, set your purpose aside in order to free
up time for something else. Unless we MAKE Jesus a priority he’ll never BE a
priority. It doesn’t just happen. It’s up to us. It’s our responsibility.
#3 Look Forward—looking
back diverts our attention. How far can you walk while looking back? No very,
at least not very long SAFELY. Eventually you’re going to trip, fall, and
stumble over something. And if that isn’t bad enough, looking back to the past
often traps you IN the past. You lose sight of what’s going on around you in
the PRESENT and the hope of the FUTURE God’s promises (Jeremiah 29:11).
#4 It Only Works If
You Work It—you can’t microwave your faith. You can’t get NEAR someone and
hope some of their faith rubs off on you. It takes works. You gotta be willing
to get dirty. God created each and every one of us with a specific purpose in
mind. We need to be willing to step into God’s plans, take ownership of our
purpose, and make a difference in this world AND… it only happens once we’re
willing to do something about it, not wait until someone finally steps in for
us.
